Learn Foreign Languages in 2008
THERE are a lot of markets in teaching the English language out there. Just think of Canada. Half of the population in Canada speaks English while the other half speaks French. And Canada is one of the largest countries in the world. Therefore, half of the country is your market if you are intending to teach English. Another potential market for English teachers out there is China. In fact, they hire English teachers from the Philippines for that. People in mainland China do not like to learn English the way they are taught in Hong Kong which has heavily been influenced by British English. They want to learn American English the way it is spoken in CCTV International which is based in Beijing.
Another group of countrymen who desperately want to learn English are the people in Japan. Japan has been the subject of two movies which underscore the ignorance of the people in speaking English as a language barrier – Lost in Translation and Babel. The first one is a gem by Sofia Coppola, the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola while the latter one is megged by a Mexican director who is also the brilliant director of 21 Grams. He surely is a gem in Mexico where people are also in dire need to learn English so they can compete with their northern neighbor, the United States, in trade concerns. But even Hispanics in the United States need to learn English more. That is why the No Child Left behind Act was signed into law by President Bush in 2002 to maximize the teaching of the English language in the public school system in the country.
Another place in the world where there is a need of English teachers is mainland Europe. Even though Europe is the smallest continent in the world, its countries do not speak one common language although of course they are descendants of the ancient Roman language which has been in turn influenced by the old Frankish and Germanic languages. In modern Europe, the governments there want to introduce English to their basic education system so they can express in one common language.
One lucrative career to look forward to in terms of the linguistics arena is to become an English dialogue coach in major Hollywood productions. Consider the movie Deep Gold for example. Most of the actors and actresses in the movie are Cambodians and Filipinos with less command of the English language. They need to espouse their English lines well, thus the need for an English dialogue coach. And Hollywood productions pay lucratively so if you want to be enterprising with this career, then make good with your performance. Another example of a movie which enlists the service of an English dialogue coach is The Kite Runner. The setting of The Kite Runner is Afghanistan and most of the actors and actresses are Afghan so they need to dub their English lines well.
