US Universities Now Offering Language Tapes

US Universities Now Offering Language TapesAFTER the passage of the No Child Left behind Act in 2002 which calls for massive English education for the sons and daughters of our immigrants as well as the Hispanics, the Native Americans and all other non-English speaking folks, the private education sector has followed suit. Foremost among them are the sectarian Catholics. The Roman Catholics have their own educational parishes established all over the nation from the 50 states to the DC area.

There are approximately 23 million students enrolled in these Roman Catholic schools. And because of higher English education, they have passed SATs with remarkably higher grades and 97 percent of them have satisfactorily submitted decent college admissions essays worth publishing at the Chicago Sun Times. This is a new development, ladies and gentlemen, and one worth praising. The United States is on the right track again of presenting itself with people who know how to speak English the Fox News way and write English the Richard Roeper way. Remember that these college admissions staffs who read your college admissions essays are educational psychologists who know which of the essays are really original. The Waldorf and the Montessori schools are also emulating this one.

And it’s not just the basic education schools who are giving out English language tapes as part of what the students are paying for their tuition. Many colleges and universities across the country are following suit. Leading them are none other than the Jesuits whose university located at the political capital of the country, Georgetown, is an institution where great statesmen and stateswomen like Bill Clinton and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines have graduated.

Georgetown University’s offerings in international relations are A-class so much that it doesn’t take only domestic students who are bent to have a career at Foggy Bottom or as National Security Advisor, they are also educational havens for foreigners who want to be diplomats and foreign policy crafters in their own country. Some of them are from such countries as Saudi Arabia or Israel. Most of these students learn only an English word or two so to boost their English language acquisition skills, they need to take an entire semester of the subject. There, they are given language tapes (both in audio and video) so that they can practice English skills back in their respective dormitories or any off-class time.

Following suit is the Johns Hopkins University in nearby Maryland. Johns Hopkins is the crème de la crème of all medical educational institutions in the United States. People from top medical facilities in the country such as the Mayo Clinic, the USAMRIID (United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases) and CDC back in Atlanta are graduates of Johns Hopkins. Johns Hopkins has also followed suit in distributing English language tapes to all its students because there are lots of foreign medical students here. Most of them are from France which has the best medical practices in the world.
